  • 1.  How do I increase the vCPU count of a nested ESXi server VM?

    I have a test setup that has several VM installed with ESXi 8.0u1.

    I wanted to increase the vCPU count for these VMs as they had been created with 2 x vCPU and wanted increase it to 4.

    I made the change, at the same time as increasing the vRAM as well, and when rebooted the console screen of the nested hypervisor showed the increase in RAM size but not the increase in vCPU count.

    Do I have to completely reinstall ESXi to get the change in vCPU registered, or is there an easier quicker way?

    The new hardware specs should show up right  away. Please check whether the VMs' vCPUs are configured as virtual multi-core CPUs, e.g. 2 dual-core CPUs.

    I think I sorted it.

    Changed the cores/socket value.

    Yeah! Don't mind me, having a mental aberation!

    The console of ESXi only reflects the number of sockets. So when I increased the vCPU count from 2 cores at 1 core per socket, to 4, it became 4 cores at 2 per socket. The socket count remained at 2, and hence the console still showed :

    2 x Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2660 etc.

    Where I had expected to see 4 x.

    If I had waited and examined the host summary information, I would have seen it was OK! DOh!
