  • 1.  How do i determine if a custom ESX is installed ?

    Posted Mar 26, 2018 09:16 PM

A customer has an ESX host 5.5.0 and is experiencing different issues. To solve the trouble i want to update the ESXi server to a higher update level. Is there anyway to determine what the installed version is, Vendor custom or standard ESXi.

I understand just trying is not an option :smileyhappy:

Yes , you can see that under "Summery"

Please click on the Esxi Host from the inventory and click on Summery tab under configuration. You should be able to see there.

That would be correct if the host has been updated i guess. That's not the case though. It's a release version, so not updated or patched. it only states the version 5.5.0 and the build.

You should be able to see at the same place if its a custom or standard image.

    ESXi-6.5.0-20170404001-standard

    ESXi-6.5.0-20170404001-custom

I do not have a Lab with Custom image installed otherwise should have shared the screenshot.

You can run the below command as well.

    [root@esxi65-1:~] esxcli software profile get

    (Updated) ESXi-6.5.0-20170404001-standard

       Name: (Updated) ESXi-6.5.0-20170404001-standard

       Vendor: VMware, Inc.

OK Yoy got me on the right track ! Not exactly the same but close enough for the definite answer, thanx !

For clearity we use a vsphere client (not a webclient) and the ESX it's not a 6 version.

So the summary looks, a bit different, like this :

Oops my bad, it was an update1
