  • 1.  How Can I Create a VM From an ISO?

    Posted Aug 27, 2010 02:30 PM

I just installed VMware ESXi 4.1.0 on a server and then downloaded the vSphere client to login to the server. I created a Linux (Debian 5 64-bit) VM profile but I have the Linux ISO file on my PC which I have vSphere client installed on. How can I tell my new VM machine to boot from the ISO that is physically located on my PC? Is there a way I can browse to my PC using the vSphere client or must I burn the ISO to a CD-R and physically place it in the CD-ROM on the host system so I can begin my Linux install?

    Thanks for any assistance!

You can choose the ISO image on your PC. Click with your right mouse button on vm - Edit settings ... - select CD/DVD Drive on the right panel - Client Device in the left panel - OK. Power on the vm - press CD/DVD connection button on the toolbar - select the needed ISO image

you will need to make sure the ISO file is accessible to the ESXi host by moving it to a VMFS datastore or NFS dayastore that is accessible to the ESXi host - then follow the instructions here - on how to install form an ISO image -

You may upload your ISO to your datastore by using the VI Client

    To upload the ISO :-

    • Open your VI Client --> Click on your Datastore and Browse --> Upload file and choose your ISO.

    To mount the ISO :-

    • Select your VM --> Edit Settings --> Choose CD ROM --> Select on Datastore ISO file --> Browse your Datastore which your upload --> Select the ISO --> OK

    Thank you :smileyhappy:
