    Hi,

I am planning for a budget home lab setup for working on both server and desktop visualization. But I want to achieve this under a tight budget. I have thought of the following configuration. I want suggestions on this and shall i make any change on this configurations?

    Open Filer:

    Intel Atom Processor

    4 GB RAM

    1 TB + 1 TB HDD

16 GB Boot Drive (Pen Drive)

    DLink 1 gig NIC

    VCenter Server:

Intel Core 2 Duo 3.0 GHz Processor

    4 GB Ram

    250 GB HDD

    DLink 1 gig NIC

    ESX Server - 1:

    Intel Core i5-4430 Processor

    Gigabyte GA-B75M-D3H Motherboard

    8 GB DDR3 RAM

    2 X DLink 1 gig NIC

16 GB Boot Drive (Pen Drive)

    ESX Server - 2:

    Intel Core i5-4430 Processor

    Gigabyte GA-B75M-D3H Motherboard

    8 GB DDR3 RAM

    2 X DLink 1 gig NIC

16 GB Boot Drive (Pen Drive)

Using HP x705w 16 GB Pendrive as Boot Drives

    Sounds good.

I'm a little doubtful about the Dlink NIC's for ESXi. Why not go for ones which are supported? I have seen a lot of people who complain that Dlink NICs stopped working from 5.0 onwards.

If you have a plan or a workaround you can use Dlink NICs.

I know that. Unfortunately those NICs are not supported by VMWare. So added custom vib to enable them. I am using them in my current setup. So, there will be no problem. Other than that any problems?

If you have it working i do not see any other problems.
