find vm with mac address

    Hi,

Using ESXi4.1 and corresopnding vSphere server

On my network I have two ip numbers used by a machine having a 00:50:56:.... mac address. Is there any way to get an overview of alle virtual machines in a virtual center environment with the mac addresses listed?

Or.... do I need to open each VM individualy and look al each network card to see what the mac address is?

If there is no way yet..... feature request please.....

I'd recommend you take a look at RVTools (http://www.robware.net/). That's a really nice tool.

perfect tool, glad I know about that one now. :-)

Unfortunately, according to that tool I do not have any VM with MAC 00:50:56:73:b6:97 or 00:50:56:71:5d:a9.

The MAC addresses are not in the dynamic range 00:50:56:b7:... nor in the manual range 00:50:56:00:...

The "flexible" adapters have a 00:0c:29:.... address, so that's not it either.

    So what could it be?

Did you also check the "vSC+VMK" tab?

Does someone in your environment run a stand alone host or probably run VM's in VMware Workstation with modified MAC addresses?

If nothing else helps, you may need to find the physical NIC port, on which the MAC address is registered.

    Hello.

Any chance that someone has a system with Workstation, Player, Fusion, etc running? You might have to get the network folks to track these MAC addresses to a physical port to locate the device.

    Good Luck!

    Hi,

Found the cause: I had pretty much everything documented for my iSCSI network except.... the ESXI hosts themselfs. :-(

Turns out those 00:50:56:7... numers were the ip-numbers for the host on the iSCSI virtual switch.

Oh, well, I learned something new today. ;-)

Thanks for the feedback. Glad to hear you found them.

At least you now know about RVTools :smileywink: Btw. didn't the MAC addresses show up in the "vSC+VMK" tab?

Aha, yes they are indeed on the vSC+VMK tab. After looking at that tab and seeing what it does list (vCenter Server and VMkernel info) it's logical ;-)

I did look at the vHost tab but that did not list the MAC addresses.

You can download and install RVTools then connect to your vCenter Server.

Once you are logged in, you can check the vInfo tab to get all the VM related information.
