fatal error occurred, conversion fail

hello experties i need another help. yesterday i did successfully a conversion from one server to another. but today i failed to convert one server (win 2003 small business) to my desktop (win XP). every parameter i give perfect. the connection was perfect. but when the conversion start with VCenter it's failed and give e message "fatal error occurred. but the most reason for this is loss of network connection". even i tried to direct connect the desktop with the server. IP and other settings are perfect. i send the image with this message. i also disable the anti virus.

hello i want to add some more info about the same issue. the physical server which i want to make an image with the VCenter converter is Dell poweredge 2950. i see some information regarding Dell server. I tried some of those. But still not succeed. any idea plz???

You say you want to copy it to your desktop. You should set the

destination as "hosted" and specify VMware Workstation or VMware

Server, not vCenter Server.

I am also having a similair problem. I'm trying to convert a blade that boots from SAN and getting the same error. I've got two different ESX servers and it fails when I try to convert to either one. The storage for both ESX servers points to a LUN on the same SAN the original boots from. In the Application event log I get the following:

Is this something that just won't work or do I need to take a different approach to converting this server?

Can you attach the VMware Converter log file? It should be under C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMware\VMware Converter Enterprise\Logs

It is throwing the following errors:

'DisksAndVolumesDataConnectionLogger' 4172 error] Exception getting Disks and Volumes, _sourceStorageInfo is missing!!

Assuming you are using an administrator account to access the source, try first converting it to a hosted VM, like server 2.0 and then convert THAT to ESX. Rename the existing log and post the new one if it fails.

I gave that a shot and got the same error. Here's the log.

I'm starting to get the feeling that the issue is the fact that this server boots from SAN. I think the converter is having a problem reading the HD info through the HBAs on the blade and giving me this error.

I have converted boot from SAN machines, so it should not be an issue here.Another thing that concerns me isthe reference to N:\program files\... Is this a terminal server of some sort?

Can you map to the c$ from the converter server? Try running the stand-alone converter server from the source server if you haven't tried that yet. Make sure you have rebooted the source if it is windows 2000. Possibly a reboot will help anyway.

When you say the converter server, this is just a local install of the vCenter Converter Standalone version 4.0.0. There is no converter server. So far I've used this on two other servers successfully and have ony started to have this problem pop up now. I've tried running the converter from my laptop and told it to convert a remote computer but that failed as well. Although, when I tried to run that conversion I was trying to convert the Citrix server to a VM.

I just uninstalled the Standalone on the server I'm trying to convert and then ran it from my laptop. It went through installing the agent to the server just fine. For good measure I logged into that server and rebooted it. I tried to convert to a VM on the ESX server using the SAN storage and it failed (logs with the 1 at the end). I then tried to convert to a VMware Server 2.X using a USB drive connected to my machine to hold the VM. That also failed. I've attached the logs that contains info for both errors. I'm not sure if you need the agent logs or not but I included them just in case.

This is really wierd and probably something stupid that I am missing. I definitly has something to do with getting the storage infor out of the source server. Like I said, I have done boot from SAN conversions in the past without issues.

You could try the cold-clone CD, but you may need to use petool.exe to inject the HBA drivers. You can also try Continuum's MOA -> http://www.sanbarrow.com/moa.html or use clonezilla to image and then converter to convert it.

I have always preached that when all else fails, do a cold clone. As long as the live CD OS "sees" the disks, you will be able to convert it.

Try Converter 4.0.1, and if it fails with the same error, post a screenshot showing the disk layout in Windows disk management.

I had this exact same error while trying to convert a Dell PowerEdge 2850. My solution was to disable the virtual media drivers, reboot and run again, this time error free. Evidently the virtual media drivers cause the converter to freak out while enumerating the volumes.

Control Panel ->System ->Hardware->Device Manager

Expand "Disk Drives". Right click on and disable the "Dell VSF" device.

Expand "DVD/CD-ROM drives. Right click on and disable the "Dell VCD" device.

Save, reboot(may not be necessary) and convert.

Thanks for the info. I had the same problem on a dell 860 server. stopping those virtual drivers worked.

It did require an OS reboot to get them to stop before converting successfully.

I had the same problem with vConvertor 4 so I just used VMWare Converter 3.0.3 and it worked fine. Not really a fix for the problem but if solved the issue for me.:)

Varity facts can cause same error, such as virtual media from DRAC(DELL), Media tray(IBM Blade) etc,

I use Symantec System recovery for server 8.5 (Trialware from Symantec), click one time copy, which will generate a v2i and a sv2i file,

then use converter, choose 3rd party image file as source.

it always work.
