I am trying to expand drive C:\ on a Windows XP VM but even when the system is off the option to resize the drive is grayed out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

the only way to expand an IDE HDD is to use VMware Converter.

Is there an easy way to change the VM to not use IDE so it will be easier to expand the drive?

Right click on the ESX/ESXi host server, select "Import Machine" and then walk through the wizard that comes up...

I don't have the plugin installed in my environment, but you would "import" machine. Power it down, it's probably quicker. Your source and destination will be a VMware Infrastructure virtual machine. Once the conversion is complete, power it on, check it out and delete the original if everything looks good.

Remember in step 3 to change the disk controller.

Under step three in the customization there is no place to change the disk controller. Just typical Sysprep information.

While in step 1: Source, you have the option to increase the size of the disks in the VM. That's where you would change the size to be what you want it to be. I would recommend bumping the C to something you can live with. Add a D drive later (if you haven't already) and use that to store things like applications and such.

Like i said i don't use the plugin, so it may be a little different than the standalone version.

Download the latest and in step3 you'll see where to change the controller type.

I'll give it a try. Will I need to have the LSI driver for Win XP after I make the change?

I don't believe so, converter should handle it, but just in case, I've attached the one we use.

I'm all set. The standalone converter did what I needed. Thanks for all your help.

Hello and welcome to the forums.

Do you have snapshots on this virutal machine? That could be causing this.

    Good Luck!
