  • 1.  ESXi SPAN (mirror) port

    Posted Jul 24, 2018 10:31 AM

I'd like to monitor a physical network SPAN port with some security tools running on VMs is ESXi v6.5. I've followed the process here (VMware Knowledge Base) and created a port group and vSwitch, enabled promiscuous mode, and uplinked to a spare port on my server (HP ProLiant DL360 G6).

I created mirror port on my upstream switch and checked the data on that physical port using my laptop and wireshark. I cannot however, see any data from a VM on that port group using wireshark.

Ideas please how to troubleshoot this?

    HI VMWare Community,

I have a similar issue ongoing right now.

So I am not able to see the SPAN traffic when connecting the SPAN cable in the 1st NIC (vmnic1) on a HP proliant server hosting ESXi.

I have also done everything according to the KB - VMware Knowledge Base , but do not see any SPAN traffic.

However when i connect my laptop having wireshark, with the SPAN cable, I see the required traffic just fine.

I have been pulling my hair out from past week on this issue. Kindly help.

    The ESxi version - 6.5

    Esxi Server - HP Proliant

HP SWitch is configured with Mirror Port configuration.
