  • 1.  ESXi Compatible RAID Controller

    Hello,

    I built a server not long ago one for learning about virtualization, since I really want to get into it greatly, and also for a new File Server since my external drive died. Now, I built the server and put ESXi 5.5 on it and connect to it with vSphere. The only parts I Didn't get yet are the RAID Controller and hard drives to go with it. I'm trying to determine what RAID Controllers will be compatible with ESXi and possibly provide passthrough, so that I can use FreeNAS as my file server.

    Would anyone have any suggestions on this?

    Edit: I should note that this is for personal use, since as mentioned, I'm trying to learn as much as possible with this.

    Hi,

    If you want to check if your raid controller is compatible with your ESXi build, you need to check the vmware hardware compatibility list here :VMware Compatibility Guide: System Searchor here VMware Compatibility Guide: I/O Device Search

    For your freenas, no need to use the passthrough , just create a VM with the proper size, and install freenas on it. That's all.

    I'm hoping I picked a good system to build, because what I'm looking at.... I might have messed up a bit in choice.

    Do you have any suggestions? The compatibility chart thinks I don't really have any options, which if that's the truth, kinda sucks.

    I'm looking for a 8-port RAID Controller for the server. The server motherboard and processor:

    Motherboard - SUPERMICRO MBD-X9SCM-F-O LGA 1155 Intel C204 Micro ATX

    Processor - Intel E3-1230V2 LGA 1155 3.3GHz

    As to the raid controllers, you can choose from

    VMware Compatibility Guide: System Search

    The screenshot will show you what to search for

    Thank you for your help! I didn't know that was all I had to search for.

    So, I was hoping I could go with the following, but I didn't actually see it on the compatibility lookup. Can you just confirm that what I am seeing is correct, just so I am not overlooking something?
