  • 1.  ESXi auto-creating additional hard disks

    Hi-

    Leverage ESXi 6.0 Update 3 A15

I have a VM instance that should have one 500GB hard disk. The guest OS recognizes this and only this 500GB hard disk (which is great).

However the Hardware Configuration console for the vm instance shows a number of hard drives which we didn't create. Any ideas how these could have been auto-created by ESXi?

ESXi does not automatically create and attach rogue disks to VMs, so you (with or without your knowledge) seem to have had some process/person/action do this. If none other than the first disk are in use, just delete them.

    Hello Bill,

    Welcome to Communities.

As daphnissov said, ESXi/vCenter doesn't add disks to a VM unless you/someone/something else added told them to add them.

Did you perchance create this VM from a template of ova that has multiple disks?

Does this VM serve a function that is intended to temporarily hot-add disks such as a backup-proxy?

I would strongly advise validating the identity of any disks before considering deleting them as they might belong to other VMs - you can do this simply by looking at the path to the vmdk from the drop-down information on each hard-disk.
