Two threads, and neither of them in the area for vSphere upgrades - I've reported this thread so a moderator should move it, and they should also delete your duplicate.
I believe the answer to your question depends on whether you have an active support contract - if you do you should be entitled to a license key for v7, but the v7 software won't accept a v6 key.
