esxcli software profile update doesnt work

HI

I am trying to update esxi 7.03 to a new security patch 24784741 with following command

esxcli software profile update -p ESXi-7.0U3w-24784741-standard --depot=/vmfs/volumes/67dc0f2c-c658b04e-60ee-1249c0c000a1/Patches/VMware-ESXi-7.0U3w-24784741-depot.zip

but when i output this command i get this error

Why it cannot update this host and how do i do that i tried on all servers and nothing works

Hi,
You are encountering the error because you are trying live update ESXi with a patch profile that contains VIBs that cannot be updated or removed while the system is running.

Error "the transaction is not supported VIB cannot be live installed, cannot be removed live" means some of the VIBs you are trying to install or remove during the update require a reboot or cannot be handled while ESXi is running. This is expected behavior.

 

You need to put the host into Maintenance Mode then Run the esxcli update command then Reboot the host.

 

your command is correct 

 

esxcli software profile update -p ESXi-7.0U3w-24784741-standard --depot=/vmfs/volumes/67dc0f2c-c658b04e-60ee-1249c0c000a1/Patches/VMware-ESXi-7.0U3w-24784741-depot.zip

 

Just Validate Profile Before Update

 

esxcli software profile update --dry-run -p ESXi-7.0U3w-24784741-standard --depot=/vmfs/volumes/yourdatastore/Patches/VMware-ESXi-7.0U3w-24784741-depot.zip

 

The error is due to trying a live update on non-dynamic VIBs. always require the host to be in Maintenance mode and reboot post successfully execution.

Hi, quick check - is the host in maintenance mode?
Also, from which build are you upgrading exactly?

Host is in maintenance mode but it is booting from storage not sure if this means anything. Hosts that have hard disk in them are u pdating without issues

It is just host that has booting from storage

Boot from SAN? Not sure if this could be it but worth checking the LUN size:

Boot from SAN (FC/FCoE/iSCSI) is supported, requires a dedicated LUN, minimum of 32 GB is recommended.

Also, check /var/log/esxupdate.log - you might catch more details there.
