  • 1.  ESX connecting to multiple dvSwitches

    Posted Jul 15, 2010 08:11 AM

    Hi,

Is it possible that an ESX/ESXi host can be connected to multiple dvSwitches (via different vmnics on the host)? Is this configuration supported?

    Thanks,

    Watsh

Yes. Up to 16 distributed switches per host.

Sorry but this is not correct

16 distributed switchs maximum per virtual center, not per host.

you can have 64 hosts per 1 distirbuted switch..

When using DVS you have to change your mind set. With stardard switch(VSS) you pretty much created a switch for everything to seperate. You do the opposite now with DVS you create one DVS and have multiple port groups for speciliazed functions.

The only true reason to create a new DVS is cross datacenters, DVS is datacenter centric, so if you have 4 hosts in one Datacenter inside of VC you cannot add hosts from another datacenter to that DVS.

This factor becomes a limiting factor.

    Google "configuration maximums vmware 4.0"

It is possible to have a host on multiple dvSwitches assuming you have enough physical nic's to attach to the uplink ports

Therefore having 16 distributed switchs maximum per virtual center also means the maximum switches available to connect to a host to, would be 16

I was referring to Configuration Maximums for 4.1. Numbers have changed - now it is 16 distributed vSwitches per host, 32 per vCenter, 350 hosts per vSwitch.
