Can someone from VMware confirm core limits for the essentials license. I have an ongoing support contract so continue to upgrade my essentials license. Currently I'm at 6.5. I plan to start purchasing replacement hardware. My previous V4 license says "VMware vSphere 4 Essentials PROMO Bundle for 3 hosts (Max 2 processors per host and 6 cores per processor)". Am I still limited to 6 cores per processor with my 6.5 essentials subscription? Googling shows some sites (non-vmware) that says the core limit has been removed. I'm looking at a 12-core CPU system, so obviously I need to know this.

    Thank you,

    -Bob

    Hi Bob,

The core limit has long gone: https://www.vmware.com/content/dam/digitalmarketing/vmware/en/pdf/product/vmware-product-guide.pdf

Trying to locate another document that I know says this better :smileyhappy:

    Kind regards.

This one lays it out in the question and answer section: https://www.vmware.com/content/dam/digitalmarketing/vmware/en/pdf/products/vsphere/vmware-vsphere-vsom-pricing-whitepape…

Here you can see that Essentials is limited to 6 sockets (processors) and a maximum of 3 host but no core or ram limit.

    Hope that helps!

Days of the "vRAM Tax" are long time ago.  Right now there is no Core limit in vSphere so you can go for your 12 Core CPU.   Well..... than Microsoft comes into play :smileyhappy:

I started with three hosts with 1 socket quad core, then 2 socket quad core, now a 2 socket hex core. Sounds like my next upgrade is going to be 2 socket 8 (maybe 10 core) cores and 196gb ram. Nice that my essentials license has "grown" with me. I wish there was an economical path to HA/Vsan, but at $2500 per socket and going from Essentials to E-Plus, pricing is way beyond what I can afford as an SMB.

Anyways, thank you all so much for the quick answers!

    Q. Does the vSphere 6.7 licensing model—per-processor without limitation on the number of virtual machines, cores or amount of physical RAM—apply to vSphere 5.x and vSphere 6.x?

    A. Yes. There are no restrictions on the number of cores or amount of physical RAM for vSphere 5.x and 6.x customers.

    Q. Does the vSphere 6.7 licensing model apply to existing licenses of vSphere 4.x or prior?

    A. No. The new vSphere licensing model applies only to new purchases of vSphere licenses or to existing licenses of vSphere 4.x or older that are version upgraded to vSphere 5.x or vSphere 6.x.
