  • 1.  Entering Maintenance Mode does not finish in a adequate time

    Hi all

I have a 48 Node ESXi V6 U2 Cluster. HA and DRS are enabled.

When I start putting a host into maintenance mode, all VMs are moved to another Hosts correctly. So after a while the host is empty but still does not enter maintenance mode. It just sits there and "is doing nothing". After a couple of hours the host enters maintenance mode correctly. Sometimes it takes 8 hours, sometimes 24 hours is not enough.

To work around the Problem while there is no VM on the host and the Task entering MaintMode has not finished yet, I go and disconnect the host from vCenter, move the disconnected host out of the Cluster, cancel the MaintMode Task, reconnect the host (outside from the Cluster) and start entering MaintMode again -> Host is entering Maintenance Mode within ~30s.

Another Workaround is to disable DRS (not HA) on the Cluster. When DRS is disabled Hosts are entering Maintenance Mode like expected.

    Any ideas?

Any hints in any of the ESXi host logs when you initiate the "Enter Maintenance Mode" task? hostd.log would be a good place to start.

FYI: We have never solved this issue but after updating vCenter to V6.5, DRS is working as expected...
