  • 1.  Enable IPMI on HP Z840 workstation from bios for vmware ESXi

    Posted Jul 16, 2023 04:39 PM

I have a (High End) Z840 Workstation, 2X E5-2699, And i run a vmware ESXi on it in Bare Metal mode which means Vmware is the main OS i removed the windows OS and i let it to boot up with ESXi vmware.

So, After i booted up with the vmware ESXi and i logged in to the ESXi Host Client i got an error message saying:

"This system has no IPMI capabilities, you may need to install a driver to enable sensor data to be retrieved"

So, My question is can i enable the IPMI from the BIOS of HP workstation or i need to install some driver in VMWARE OS and if i need to install a driver how can i do that from the BIOS or from the vmware OS?

Since you are running ESXi on bare metal (not as a VM) and you're not running VMware Workstation on a Windows or Linux OS, you might get a better answer by posting this question in a vSphere/ESXi forum: https://communities.vmware.com/t5/ESXi/ct-p/2009

It looks like Z840 does not have any IPMI as it is not listed in the specifications.

The name iLO is used by HP to brand their IPMI. If there is an IPMI, usually one LAN port is dedicated for its use.
