I am trying to virtualize a Windows 2000 sp4 server. This has a mirrored pair of non-hot-swap drives and one of them is gone.

When I run Converter, stand alone or from a different server, it runs through the screens fine, but it is seeing the remaining hard drive as too big. I get this message -

error: the size of all flat source disks will exceed the capacity of 'STORENAME'.

The size is consistently listed as 8338897173 GB. Its actuall about 25 gig on a 111 gig drive. I have uninstalled converter, and I have defragmented the drive. I considered runing chkdsk but am very worried about the integrity of this server and want it up and safe in virtual land so I can chuck this hardware.

    Any Ideas?

Your mirror is hardware of is software (with dynamic disks)?

Which version of the Converter are you using?

Are you using it inside the source machine?

Hardware RAID, this is a Supermicro mobo with a built in intel RAID controller. I think its an ICH5R but I could be wrong. The disk is basic.

I am using the latest Vsphere converter I could find, version 4.0.1 build 161434 and I used it both locally and from a different server.

Having the exactly same issue. win2k, tried locally and remote, but disk size is reported to be: 8338897149 GB on both disks I need to clone.

What version of converter are you using? Win2K sp 4? Are you using a RAID; what kind? Is this an SQL 2k server?

    win2k sp4

    No SQL

    4.0.1 build 16134

    INTEL 82801 SATA RAID

So far, the similiarity is the Intel SATA RAID, although sounds like different versions. Are any of your disks missing?

No, this server is humming along just fine....Just trying to get a good snapshot in case it takes a dive.

    Can you provide 2 items?

1 - Screen capture of Disk Management

    2 - diskpart output?

From a command like, run 'diskpart'. this should get you to a command line DISKPART\>

    DISKPART > LIST PARTITION

    then

    DISKPART > LIST VOLUME

then screen capture this output. Attach both screens to your post.

Both disk management and diskpart look correct and equal to each other.

I'd suggest filing a support request and referring to this thread in the problem description. If you have an existing support agreement, To file a new request, please refer to the following steps:

    - Login with your VMware.com account which is associated with your support contract

    - Click the product name you need to file a request for assistance on

    - We will respond in the appropriate time frame

    - Platinum Support Customers: http://www.vmware.com/support/services/Platinum.html

    - Gold Support Customers: http://www.vmware.com/support/services/Gold.html

Otherwise, I might mention this to your regional SE or sales rep. They may be able to file a ticket for you.

If that SR is able to identify and fix the problem, we can post the solution here.

Windows 2000 you want to use diskpar.exe

diskpar -i # (Where # is the number of the disk which you can get from Disk manger GUI)

Will do, have referenced this discussion in my reply to the VMware tech and the files we both posted.

fyi I feel a little pressure to get this done, and have indicated to the tech that, for me, a workaround like restoring from tape to a VM would be acceptable.

You only have data on the dynamic volume - don't you ?

If so - I'd unplug the disk - run Converter and then later copy the data with robocopy or whatever you prefer

LOL, sure and sep physical disks for the transaction logs and swap files.

No, this was handed to me one monolithic basic disk. Furthermore, I don't trust the RAID controller, had one of these a couple of years ago where it lost a drive same as this one and when I tried to break the mirror the operation failed and it lost all data.

I did try stopping all nonessential services before running converter, including DFS.

@prmolina Let me know if you get this resolved. I am dead in the water right now. may thanks.

I talked to support - the suggestion is that we try converter version 3.0.3.

If that doesn't work the option is to image the disk with something like Ghost or Altiris and then have converter grab the image. If that fails, I guess I will have to go to backup tapes and restore into a VM.

I hope to try this tonight.

If you are using BU Exec, stop the agent service. It can interfere.

Thats funny....I did try 3.03 as well. Same result. and no backup exec either...

Thanks..let me know how you make out.

Didn't work for me either. Will have to try a third party imaging product like ghost and grab the VM from that.

Going back a version of converter did not work.

I imaged the machine using a demo copy of ShadowProtect server by StorageCraft. Converter 4 picked up that image and pushed the image up to the ESX server no problem.

Quick plug for StorageCraft: It impressed me with its image to disk speed. I also just noted in the back of my head that I felt more comfortable using this and that there was less hastle than using the customer's paid for BUExec 12.5 with $1000 per year support. To achieve the same imaging results they would have needed to purchase a different module. It was also nice that, unlike Acronis, they didn't ask for alot of company information so their sales guys could bug me. Next time I am shopping for backup solutions they will definitely be asked to take a turn on the pitchers mound.
