    Dear team,

Need to understand the Host isolation response, following is the snap of the same.

If Host losses management n/w connectivyt and as well as storage connectivity, then the isolated host tryies to ping the isolated IP, if it unable to reach the same and confirm that Host is isolated then how isolated host will release locks on the VM which are stored on a shared storage?

    Regards

    Muhammad

Remember the Host Isolation response if performed by the Host that is isolated - so if the Isolation reponse os to Power Off the VMs the lock will be released and the VMs will restart on the remaining nodes of the cluster otherwise the VMs remain powered on with Locks intact and the remaining Nodes will fail trying to restart the VMs -

    Dear Master David Sir,

    many thanks for the reply.

i just want to know who will perform isolation response (restart the VM which r running on the failed esxi host), the master host or the failed host.

if host isolation resposne set to showtdown/poweroff/leave power, is this setting applies to VMs which r running on the failed host or applies to host....

    Regards

    Mr VMware.

Those settings are always applied to the VM - HA will do nothing to the host

The isolation response and the restart of VMs are two different things. The isolated host performs the pre-configured isolation response, which could be for example "shutdown", and the Master host coordinates the startup of the VMs on other hosts (IF using either shut down/poweroff policy).

    Dear Master Rickard,

The isolated host performs the pre-configured isolation response, which could be for example "shutdown", if that host is already unreachble on the networ then how it will perform isolation response??? how that host will be able to communicate those VM which r running on that esx host ???

    Regards

    Mr VMware

The "isolation response" is only an internal action done by a single host which has lost network connection with the other hosts. For vSphere 4.x the default isolation response is VM shutdown, that is: when a host lose network connection all VMs (with vmtools) gets a graceful shutdown.

and to be clear, it is not "vcenter" who powers down or shuts down the VMs when there is an isolation. The isolation is detected by the HA agent on the host which uses hostd eventually to take action.

The top setting is the default, or 'cluster setting'.

Each individual VM can also have it own setting that overrides the cluster default, which is what you see on the right.
