DELL R710 Raid expansion

  • 1.  DELL R710 Raid expansion

    Posted May 31, 2012 06:21 PM

    Hello,

I've ran into a problem on our DELL R710 with 4x600gb disks in raid 5. Esxi 5 is running on the same vd as the vm's.

Now I have to expand the size of the raid with two more disks. I was pretty shure that this could be done in the bios but this functionality does not exist on the perc h700 controller anymore (says Dell Prosupport).

Now I need to find a way to solve this. The server is set into production and is running 24/7.

I have tried to install OpenManage into esx with no luck. (I'm a newbie on esx / linux)

Can anyone explain to me step by step how to solve this one??

    Hello.

You will need to download the  Dell OpenManage Offline Bundle and VIB for ESXi to be installed directly on the ESXi 5 host.  Then you will download and install the Dell OpenManage Server Administrator Managed Node on a Windows system. Use the web interface on this Windows system to access the ESXi host remotely and expand the array.

    Good Luck!

    Thank you for your response.

Your link point to another file than the one sent by dell prosupport.

They suggested the file: OM-SrvAdmin-Dell--Web-6.5.0-542907.VIB-ESX50i_A02.zip. This file give me a failure. See attached file.

You are shure you are pointing to the right file??

Do I really have to put the server into maintenance mode first or can I install this during runtime??

I pointed you to the same VIB that I used on R815s and R715s without issue. I'm fairly confident it is correct. :smileywink:

When I installed the offline VIB I didn't put always put the hosts in maintenance mode, BUT I also didn't have any running VMs on them. With running VMs I would recommend it. While I'm being paranoid, I would make sure to have good backups of those VMs before doing the RAID expansion as well.

Upload the .zip file to a datastore using the vSphere Client.

Use the vSphere Client to put the ESXi host in maintenance mode.

Run the following command from the ESXi Shell:

esxcli software vib install -d /path-to-uploaded-file/Dell_OpenManage_ESXi500_OM700-643291_A00.zip

Reboot the ESXi host using the vSphere Client.

I keep getting a cryptic message. Can you see what's wrong??

Do the server need internet access to run the command??

Its better to place the host in maintenace mode and make sure host is rebooted after installation.

Refer http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/software/svradmin/65_02/ESXi_ts/esxi5_ts.pdf for installing the OMSA

    Hmm,

    I started celebrating i bit to early...:smileyconfused:

VD disk size has increased from 1.6TB to 2.7TB in OpenManage system. But now I need to access the new space in vCenter.

The function 'Increase Datastore' does not seem to work.

BTW both esxi  and vm's is installed on the same vd. Could this be the problem??

    Any idea??
