Hi, I'm trying Debian 10 on VMware Fusion 11.5, and notice there is an iso image specifically for Macs. Are there any advantages in using this over the "regular" iso on the virtual machine?

    Hi,

Haven't seen a debian mac .iso in a while. Do you have a link?

The last time that there was a mac specific .iso it was for powerPC.

Normally you would just use the standard amd64 install media in a VM.

edit: FWIW, VMware Fusion presents a regular VM to the install media, so there's nothing mac specific about the VM.

On Debians official stable release page for amd64 (https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/current/amd64/iso-cd/) you will find https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/current/amd64/iso-cd/debian-mac-10.3.0-amd64-netinst.iso. There is very little documentation about the image itself, but it seems to address specific firmware issues (at least).

    Hi,

Yes very very little info indeed.

Only managed to find this thread:

    https://linux.debian.user.narkive.com/ewFkfucl/looking-for-debian-unofficial-install-for-mac-with-firmware

As you say it is for mac specific firmware.

However the VM does not get to see the firmware of the mac, so it has no benefit at all to install this in a VM.

This is targeted at installation of debian on physical mac's.

PS: Not sure how I managed to look over that link (several times even as I was on that page earlier today  )

It sure is deceptively placed in the filename! :smileylaugh: I couldn't find the iso earlier today as well, even though I knew where it was, because I expected to find the keyword elsewhere in the filename. The regular iso works without issue. Thank you.
