  • 1.  Converting a Windows 7 64 bit PC

I attempted to convert a Windows 7 64 bit PC to a VM to be used with VMware Workstation.

The PC boots from a SCSI drive.

The conversion works fine, but when I try to sgtart the VM I see only an IDE drive and boot fails.

During conversion I said to keep the existing storage configuration.

Should I try to convert again and tell the converter to use an IDE drive, or a SCSI drive?

After converting I attempted to recover the VM using the Microsoft Windows 7 setup CD with no success.

How can I convert a Windows 7 64 bit PC (with SCSI drive) to a VM?

    Regards

Did the Converter complete both stages?  If not, re-run Converter against the virtual machine imaged from the physical PC and select the Reconfigure step.  This should install the required boot device drivers for the virtual machine so it recognizes the virtual hard disk.

    Thank you for your hint.

To be honest I was unable to complete the copnversion, but I forgot reporting that the source is an "all-in-one" PC with, probably, non standard HW.

    I will try again.

Do you suggest any third party solution in my next try fails?

My conversion of the powered-on Win7 Pro x64 machine completed successfully.  The problem starts when I try to open and run it in VM Workstation 8.  It gets to the "Starting Windows" screen and then jumps to the "Windows Error" screen where it wants you to pick from Start Normally, Safe Mode, Last Good.. etc.  Picking any of the choices just loops back around to the same screen over an over.  I cannot get it to boot from a DVD either.  Any help?
