  • 1.  Converter Cold Clone CD w/ Fusion

    Posted May 20, 2009 02:57 AM

    Good evening...

I'm not sure if this belongs in the Converter forum or the Fusion forum, so I'll start with the Converter forum.

Ok, so I'm testing the cold clone cd with fusion 2.0.4. The fusion vm I'm trying to clone is running windows xp. I configured the bios to boot from the coldclone.iso image, which worked fine and I get the "Press any key to boot from cd..." prompt. I press "any" key and then get the "Booting VMware Converter Cold Clone..." (or something similar), and then I get a full status bar with "Please wait..." (see attached screenshot). The cold clone cd doesn't ever fully boot. I've tried rebooting multiple times and I've let it sit as long as an hour (so far) without it getting any further.

    So, my question(s) is(are):

      • Should the cold clone CD boot in fusion?

      • Has anyone successfully booted a cold clone cd in fusion?

      • Is this a converter or fusion problem?

    Thanks!

    Chris

(Yes, I know I could boot the vm and then run the converter in the vm, but I'm trying to test out the cold clone functionality.)

Should the cold clone CD boot in fusion?

I would assume so. You can do it with an ESX, Workstation, or Server virtual machine. I would hope fusion is mutually applicable.

Has anyone successfully booted a cold clone cd in fusion?

I just tried it with the 4.0.2 boot disc, and have similar issues. Which version of the disc did you use?

Is this a converter or fusion problem?

combination of both. It's attempting to setup a Windows 2003 PE environment on the virtual machine. I'm wondering if it doesn't like the something that is specific to being on a mac.

I'm going to check to see if it should work or not.

Something odd I just noticed ... if I made a new virtual machine for XP with IDE Drives (no os installed) ... the Converter boot disc worked.

That's strange. I'll have to try that. My existing VM is configured with an IDE disk and XP is installed on it.

Just tried creating a new VM w/ IDE disks (no os installed) and the cd still doesn't boot. It gets as far as before. FWIW I did notice that the VM w/ XP installed is configured to have a SCSI disk.

Configure the VM as guestOS 2k3 enterprise - maybe that helps

Same result. Hangs at "Please wait..."

Zip file is called "VMware-convertercd-3.0.3-89816.zip". I can't seem to find the enterprise download for v4 (all the enterprise links take me to v3).

Or, if one doesn't exist to be downloaded the I can't figure out how to build a bood cd from within vCenter (I'm new to all of this).
