I'm trying to convert a Windows Virtual PC, Windows 7 version, to a VMWare format. I'm using VMWare vCenter Converter Standalone version 4.3.0 build-292238 installed on a Windows 7 laptop.

While I've had success using that converter on Microsoft's "vmc" virtual machine files, the converter does not work with Microsoft's "vmcx" virtual machine files. I tried to use the converter to convert the running "vmcx" virtual machine and received the message "The operation could not be completed for 'vmit101\ADMIN$' due to incorrect user credentials." I had specified a user name and password for an account that is a member of the virtual machine's Administrators group.

Is there nay way around this issue? I've got a few "vmcx" virtual machines that I'd like to convert and use in VMWare.

    Thank you.

With VMWare Workstation 6.5, what's the best way to create a virtual machine that incorporates the vmdk file created with StarWind V2V Converter?

simply create a new Windows 7 VM using defaults.

    Do not start it.

Find the directory where it is stored and move the vmdk you have into it.

Then open Virtual hardware editor - remove the cuurennt vmdk and add a new one - select option "use existing virtual disk"

Then on first boot cross your fingers.

If it does not work - launch converter 4.3 - select "configure machine" and show the newly create vmx-file.

If I understand correctly you're trying to convert a Virtual PC source machine, pointing to the files of the VM while it is running:

    1. At least you should shutdown the Virtual PC VM during the clonning process, as VM files might be locked by Virtual PC or being updated changed during the clonning process

    2. Other way to clone the running Virtual PC machine is to have it Powered On and point to it as a "Powered-on machine" giving Converter its IP and credentials

    Hope that helps

I did not try to convert the Virtual PC by pointing to the vmcx file while the Virtual PC was running. The VMWare Converter does not recognize a vmcx file as valid virtual machine source file. What I did try was what you suggested, run the Virtual PC and point the converter to it as a powered on machine. I tried it using the IP address and host name but got the same results - "The operation could not be completed for '\ADMIN$' due to incorrect user credentials."

Can you please provide logs exported from Converter, after the task fails (*.zip)?

    nnikolov,

I used the Coverter to successfully convert a vmc file from 11/23/2010 10:55:44 AM to 11/23/2010 10:57:53 AM. The failures with the powered on Virtual PC occurred before that.
