  • 1.  Conversion failed when trying to convert local machine

    Posted Jul 25, 2016 01:51 PM

    Hello,

I've just installed the vCenter Converter, as I want to try creating a virtual machine from my PC, so that when I get a new machine, I can have access to the old one, at least via a virtual machine.

To try it out, I installed it on my lap top, and tried to convert it. When it started the conversion, it got as far as 1%, and then failed with the message "FAILED: An error occurred during the conversion: 'converter.fault.FileIOFault'" I'm not sure why this is, as I was trying to save the file(s) to a hard disk that's working fine. Please see the following screenshot...

I can't see any way to edit the job, so the only thing I could do was to create anew job and try again. However, if I try this, I get the same problem.

Anyone any ideas what's going on? I can't do a thing here.

Forgot to add, I tried running the converter on my desktop, pointing it at the lap top. I tried both the lap top's machine name and IP address, but in both cases, I got an error message "Unable to contact the specified host 'whatever'.The host might not be available on the network, there might be a network configuration problem, or the management services on this host are not responding."

I can connect to the lap top via RDC or Windows Explorer without problem, but the vCenter Converter won't connect.

So I'm stuck completely. Anyone able to help?

For the first issue, take a look at this: https://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2006659

For the connection issue from the desktop, you will need to open up some ports or disable the firewall on the laptop during the conversion:

    Ports: https://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1010056

    Source

    Destination

    TCP Ports

    UDP Ports

    Notes

    Converter server

    Source computer

    445, 139, 9089 or9090

    137, 138

If the source computer uses NetBIOS, port 445 is not required. If NetBIOS is not being used, ports 137, 138, and 139 are not required. If in doubt, ensure that none of the ports are blocked.

Port 9089 is used for Converter Standalone versions, and 9090 isused for the Converter plugin.

Note: Unless you have installed Converter server to the source computer, the account used for authentication to the source computer must have a password, the source computer must have network file sharing enabled, and it cannot be using Simple File Sharing.

    Hello,

Thanks for the reply. As I said, I was just testing it out on my lap top. As I managed to find a spare HDD big enough to use, I decided to have a go on my main machine. It's spent about three hours creating the virutal machine, and has now failed at 96% with the message "Unable to reconfigure the destination virtual machine"

Any idea what this means and how I fix it? Will I have to start again form scratch, and wait another three hours before I find out if it works?

    Thanks again

Just noticed that there were some logs available. Here they are in case it helps.

OK, looks like I'm not going to get any help here!

I did some more looking around and found comments that if the failure happens after 96%, then the VHD has actually been created, but the settings might be wrong. It can sometimes be fixed by opening it in VMWare and playing with the settings.

As I had deleted my VHD after the failure, I had to run the converter again, and this time it worked! Nothing had changed on the machine, so I have no idea why it worked this time and not before.

So, if anyone else is getting this error, it's worth trying again to see if it succeeds the second (or third!) time.

    Hope this helps someone.

Glad it's sorted and apologies for the delay, there were issues with notifications for replies to threads so I dd not see your comment.
