  • 1.  Configure HA

Friends, I set up a laboratory here at the company where I work, where I installed two ESXi5, except that each is on a different host with VMware Workstation, also created a machine with vCenter and another with FreeNAS iSCSI Storage, assigns a 200GB LUN for both hosts, create a network for VMotion, Storage, and a network to a network for virtual machines.

I set up an HA cluster and put the hosts in it, I installed a Windows XP machine, then did a test, shut off the host where the VM was running Windows XP VM and was not moved to another host, simply failed to respond, see the image.

Does anyone here have any idea what I may have wrong? Will let you configure any options so that the HA does not work?

If I click on the virtual machine and select the option migrate, operate normally.

I look forward and thank you!

So you have verified the vMotion works (and by that access to the same shared storage)?

Have you done any other settings on the VM? Like Reservations? Have you also enabled DRS and set anything special?

Did you change anything in the HA cluster setup or did you accept the defaults?

I made no special change, I'm using all default parameters of the HA. Not habilitei DRS. I created three networks on each host, a network card for VMotion, a network card for the Storage and a network adapter to the virtual machines are all on the same switch, but with different IP range.

Another doubt. In a real project and client, soon I'll be running a Dell R610 with 3 hosts and an EqualLogic storage. Best practices are asked to put the hosts in a separate VLAN, it is mandatory or can I use the same LAN switches to connect hosts and network VMotion?

    Thank you!

It is very recommended to have different VLANs for the separate functions, but in no way mandatory to have it work.

Could you also check the HA Cluster Status on the Summary tab on your cluster?

EDIT: I now saw what a.p. already spotted, that the ESXi hosts only has 2 GB of RAM. I agree that you should set it to about 2.5 GB for HA to work.

Can you confirm HA configured successfully on the hosts?

With the memory assigned to the virtual ESXi hosts (2048 MB), there could be an issue with HA not being configured properly, because the minimum host memory in order to configure HA is ~2.3GB.

If the above does not apply, please post a screen shot of your HA/Admission Control settings. With the default settings (host failures tolerated) HA may not work as expected with only two hosts.
