  • 1.  Clone VMs - Rename Server SID??

    Posted Mar 13, 2012 04:08 PM

    Hello,

I have cloned a VM in my Production Environment. I would like to switch this on in my Production environment (to test upgrades etc) but obviously need to rename and change its IP address first.

What the correct procedure to follow to make sure of no conflicts?

    Thanks,

    Peter.

Did you  use vCenter ot make the clone? If you did you should have been presented with an option to customize the OS - which would have given you the capability to do this as part of the cloning process.  If you did not use vCenter than you will have to manually change IP and hosts name and regenrate a new SID

Thanks David. Yes, we did use vCenter but without the customization. We'll do it again and customize.

I trust we can then turn both VMs on in a Production environment and thus avoid conflicts?

If you used VMware's guest customizations, then you should be good to go. It does all of the sysprep/SID changing that's necessary. Obviously keep in mind that not all servers react well to having duplicates running together on the network (eg. domain controllers, exchange, etc), regardless of IPs / SIDs.
