  • 1.  Changing VM Network Port Group to Different vSwitch

    Posted Apr 27, 2010 01:28 AM

Hello! I have four vSwitches (vSwitch0 - vSwitch3) connected to 8 vmnics. Each vSwitch currently has two vmnics, one active 1000 Full and one on standby. We unfortunately have 6 VMs that are running in a VM Port Group on vSwitch0, which also has the Service Console and vmkernel. I want to move the VMs out of this port group and onto another vSwitch so that the service console/vmkernel can be isolated.

My understanding is that all I really have to do to move the VMs to another vSwitch and port group is to edit the settings of the VMs and change the network label to a different one. My question is this:

What kind of effect will a change like this have on a production VM? Will there be a brief disruption of connectivity, or will it be more significant? Less?

Trying to get a grasp on if I should make this change during a maintenance window or just do it at night sometime and not worry too much about it. Thoughts, let me know. Thanks!

as long as you have active NICs and correct port groups with VLANs set on the vSwitch, you can change the port group in the edit settings and click ok. It will probably take about 5-30 seconds for the NIC to reconfigure and the network to know its new location. shouldn't be much of a problem

Forget about vSwitch-VM link, there is no such link. VM is always linked to portgroup and it doesn't care about vSwitch at all.

If you want to "move VM to another vSwitch" then create new VM portgroup on another vSwitch and then connect all VMs to new portgroup. That's all.
