Changing an IP Adress on a physical NIC

Hello world,

I'm the first time here an quite unexperienced with VMWare.

I have installed a physikal machine with 4 Nics. Two Nics are use for User-Communikation on the LAN and they get there IP-Adresses from the DHCP-Server. One NIC I need for the outside communication. This NIC is connected to a firewall (with integrated router) outside the network and there is no DHCP running. Therefore I need to fix the IP-Adress for this NIC as static.

I don't find the command or the button to fix the IP-Adress to this NIC. Maybe this question is silly, but I'm just hanging for several hours on this problem.

Any help and comment is {color:#000000}appreciated{color}.

i'm using VMWare4; vSphere Client and ESX 4

Could you please post a network configration screenshot?

There is no IP addresses on physical NICs on ESX. IP addresses are assigned to virtual interfaces like vswif0 (service console) or vmkernel, and traffic from this interfaces can go though one or anothe physical NIC depending on configuration.

This I understand - you can fix the IP Adress for the service console and the vmkernel (VMotion, etc). But the problem is the normal network adapter; in my case vmnic3.

i attach a screenshots showing the problem. the IP-Adress of the vnic3 should be 192.168.100.4, because 192.168.100.2 is used by another server.

Michael, 192.168.100.2 is not an IP assigned to vmnic3, it is an IP that vmnic3 see in the network. It was made to help you and see which network is seen from this particular NIC.

So it's ok to see 192.168.100.2 here.

You can not assign any IP to vmnic3, this is just a physical interface used to access network, so you need to configure some interface (vmkernel or just a VM) on virtual switch connected to vmnic3 and assign this interface IP 192.168.100.4

does that mean, that the IP-Configuration is coming from the guest operating system, in my case windows 2008? if so, than I can fix the IP-Adresse in the Windows network configuration. In my oppinion: that would be the best choice.

If you want to use vmnic3 for VM traffic - yes. You can install Windows 2008 and assign 192.168.100.4 to it.
