  • 1.  Change the download folder of Update Manager

    Posted Oct 15, 2008 05:10 AM

Hi, I installed and successfully using Update Manager in my environment. But the problem here is, on my VC, I have less free space in C:\ drive and update manager downloads are occupying that free space and making things more worse for me :-(. I wanted to know if there is any way to educate/configure my update manager to download all patches to other drive/directory. This is saves me from space crunches.

    Thanks,

    Sitaram

    From the documentation:

Configuring Update Manager Patch Download Location

When you install Update Manager, the installation wizard allows you to change the location for downloading

patches. If you keep the default location during the installation, and want to change it later, without

reinstalling Update Manager, you have to do it manually.

To configure the Update Manager patch download location

1 Stop the Update Manager service.

2 Find the vci-integrity.xml file in the Update Manager installation directory.

The default location is C:\Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure\Update Manager.

3 Create a backup copy of this file in case you need to revert to the previous configuration.

4 Edit the file by changing the following fields:

The default patch download location is:

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMware\VMware Update Manager\

    Data\

The directory path must end with \.

Save the file in UTF-8 format, and replace the existing file.

5 Copy the contents from the old patchstore directory to the new folder.

6 Restart the Update Manager service.

Check Event log for Update Manager. You should have something like this:

Successfully downloaded guest update metedata. New updates: 19

    and couple lines below

VMware IUpdate Manager download alert (critical/total): ESX 0/0; Windows 5/19; Linux 0/0

Hi, I don't get any events like that in event viewer however the the update_metadata.xml file seems to be updating the date everytime the updates are set to run. Also another problem i'm not getting any email notification. The ports are open the smtp server is valid the sender account works but not sure what else could be causing the problem. also i can't find anything in event viewer....any help will be great thank you.

Did everything work before you changed the download folder? When did you change it?

Last ESX update I have is dated 4/29, so if you changed the folder after that date you are probably OK.

Create baseline for Exchange Server 2007 (this is the latest update I have in my repository dated 5/18) and see if it will work.

    Hi,

Is there anyway to clear out older updates once they have been used to stop this from growing? From what I can see you the Update manager will download whatever is available all the time. Should I set it to download only critical updates after a certain date?
