  • 1.  Can't access ESXi true ILO

    Posted Oct 09, 2012 12:35 PM

    Dear users,

I have a problem that I can't access our ESXi host by ILO.
There is no clue for me that I can say how this happend since it has worked but since a month or 2 we are not able to login.
Well to mention login, I can't even connect to the webpage from the ESXi host.
I have tried to find a solution on the internet, but there was not that could explain me how this could happen or how to solve this problem we are facing currently.

    ESXi Model: ProLiant DL380 G7
    Lockdown Mode: Disabled
    Version: 4.1.0, 800380

    Services Properties

I/O Redirector (Active Directory Server): Stopped
Network Login Server (Active Directory Service): Stopped
    lbtd: Running
    Local Tech Support: Stopped

Local Security Authentication Server (Active Directory Service): Stopped
    NTP Deamon: Running
    VMware vCenter Agent: Running
    Remote Tech Support (SSH): Running
    Direct Console UI: Running

    - I can ping the ESXi host

    - I can use putty to login succesfully on the host

    - I have restarted the following services:
VMware vCenter Agent, Remote Tech Support (SSH) and Direct Console UI.

-I have updated the ESX host to the latest files

    This didn't helped

    - I have restarted the ESX host
    This didn't helped

    - I have checked the configuration on the machine it self, but there was no option that could give me a clue that there was something wrong.

My knowledge of VMware is not that big, so I was doubting to contact VMware or try a discussion on the forum.
So If I don't understand you correctly, my bad for that.

    Kind regards,
    Martijn

    Martijn,

Are you experiencing this issue on all the host or just one host. To me it looks like it could be related to networks, may be the iLO port is disabled or

check the iLO cable connectivity from the rear end of the server.

    Regards,

    Ravi

    Dear Ravi,

Thank you for replying on my question.
And we are experiencing this on all our hosts.
But currently I have set one ESXi host in Maintenance Mode so I could work on a solution.-

    - Where can I see if the iLO port is disbaled?

    - Checked the iLO cable
The connectivity is up and running (the cable is on both-sides green)

    - Also I can not connect to the webpage for the management tools.
Not from the name or the IP

If you are using the ILO network port on your host, ILO and ESXi have nothing in common except for the hardware. ILO has a separate IP address. If you cannot connect to the ILO web page, you may check the settings by pressing "F8" (when ILO is shown) while booting the host.

    first

    - is this work before?

if your answer is "YES" and as you said currently all other host are having a same problem then this could be Network issue

Beside that if this iLO previously never configure then you have to physically available in from of host along with Keyboard and reboot  the host during post process

The following steps will set up the HP ILO2 for remote hardware management.

    1. While the host server hardware is booting, press the F8 key when the boot process states:  “Integrated Lights-Out 2 Advanced Press [F8] to configure”
    2. Select Network > DNS/DHCP and press Enter.
    3. DHCP Enable to OFF by pressing Space. Press F10 to save the setting.
    4. Select Network > NIC and TCP/IP and press Enter.
    5. Otherwise, change the IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Gateway IP Address . Press F10 to save the settings.
    6. Select User > Edit and press Enter. Select the user Administrator and press Enter.
    7. Change the Login name to the iLO2 Admin UserID. Also change the Password (and Verify password) boxes to the password for the remote administrator user. Be sure to store the password securely. Press F10 to save the settings.
    8. Select File > Exit and press Enter.
    9.   This will complete the basic iLO2 configuration.

    thanks

    - Has this work before?
Yes, it has worked before, but I don't know the reason why its not working now anymore.

The following steps will set up the HP ILO2 for remote hardware management.
I don't think these steps are neccassery since I know my login to go into the iLO, its just I can't connect to the website since its refruse to make a connection.

I came accross this website, which gives me a clear few to search the problem. I will update my ticket on Monday, since I'm 2 day's off from my work.

There are three (3) categories you will need to group your troubleshooting into,

Category 1 - A Faulty cable or the cable is unplugged
Category 2 - The Server is powered off
Category 3 - Other (Firewall is blocking the port, server port is  not assigned to the remote administration VLAN, iLO port was not  configured or improperly configured, username/password needs to be  reset, etc)

First try pinging the IP address, if you are unsuccessful annotate that  and then try to SSH with Putty or a comparable SSH application. If you  are unsuccessful, SSH into the remote switch where the servers connect  into and see if the port is "hot" (configured and up). Annotate the port  description, and if the port is "up" (no shut) but nothing connected it  is most likely either Category 1 (A Faulty cable or the cable is  unplugged) or Category 2.

If you can RDP to the server, but not SSH or vice versa, the issue is  related to a port being blocked. Ensure port 3389 (TCP) is open for RDP  and port 22 (TCP) is open for SSH. Any issues related to one protocol  working and another not will be placed in Category 3.

If you are able to receive a remote shell or screen via RDP, SSH, and  iLO but you are unable to login with the credentials then the issue will  fall under Category 3 and the resolution will be to properly configure  the login/password.

When troubleshooting remote administration issues, always utilize the  OSI Model and start from the Physical Layer working your way up to the  Application Layer. In other words, don't start resetting  usernames/passwords until you can ping and actually connect to the  server(s).

Here is an update about my problem connecting to the iLO.

I have managed to connect to the iLO by using putty. When I was in our iLO with putty I have checked if the config files are looking good, and there was nothing that was different then before.
After I have checked this I have turned off our complete server and unplugged the cables so the netwerk connection between the iLO port and the switch was down. This was recommend on internet for a possible solution. Unfortunately this didn't helped for me and the problem still occurs.

Since the connection is up and I'm able to login into the iLO with putty I was thinkin that maybe a firewall is blocking the connection on port 80 an 443.
So I have asked our manager to check if this port is allowed on the ip from the iLO.

I will let you know when I have more information if that will solve the problem or not.

    Dear users,

    We have found the problem.
    1. There was a proxy between that was preventing use from logging in.
    2. Within Internet Explorer we needed to clear the checkbox named: Automatically detect settings, this can be found at Internet Explorer Options => Connections > Lan Settings

Thank you all for helping me and putting also your time and effort into this case.

    Kind regards,
    Martijn
