These problems have been discussed here numerous times and many different solutions are provided. Mine are these:
1.
If you version works, don't upgrade. Look for problems that others have had. I haven't upgraded from 17.5.2 and I don't have any problems (with the latest Win 11 or Kubuntu 24.04).
2.
If you do want to have a later 17.5 version, don't Upgrade. It never works. Wipe the old one out and install a new one.
3.
If you do need the installation media, do not ask from Broadcom, if it doesn't immediately work. I took, just for testing, it from archive.org. It is free, you can get it "from everywhere". There have also been instructions how to get it from vmware dot com. From there you can get EVERY version that was ever made.
4.
Don't think about Player, it is discontinued. There is absolutely no reason to use Player, which is just a limited version, since Pro is for Free.

Subject: Cannot update vmware workstation player
i have vmware player 17.5. and i wanted to start a software update but i always get the message: Error while updating software: There was a problem updating a software component. Try again later and if the problem persists, contact VMware Support or your system administrator. I can still download it directly from the download page because the following popup appears: "Not entiled"
