  • 1.  Cannot install ESXi 4 U1 on IBM System x3550 M3

I'm trying to install ESXi 4 Update1 on a brand new IBM x3550 M3 machine.

The installtion stops with the "Unable to find a supported device to write..." message.

I've tried with the normal ESXi iso and with the IBM-customized one downloadable from VMWare - no success.

    Any ideas?

ESXi is very demanding of hardware. That message usually indicates an unsupported RAID controller.

There is a subtext entry in the HCL that suggests you might need a specific patch. Check the HCL

    1. This server uses a processor series that requires a 4.0 U1 patch (Release Name - ESX400-201002001, Bulletin ID ESX400-201002401-BG / Release Name ESXi400-201002001, Bulletin ID ESXi400-201002401-BG) or newer for full support.

You could also try the latest ESXi 4.1 release.

The latest one I can download right now from VMWare is version 4 Update 1.

I do not see any 4.0 U2 or 4.1 downloads mentioned by the HCL. Are these available for free?

4 U2 does not seem to be visible on the free download page. If you have a paid licensed version 4 U2 is available. 4.1 free is on the download page.

Yes, ESXi V4.1 is able to see the disks.
