Please double-check if SSH is enabled on Host. Use this to check settings - http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2004746

Re: root logon issue, has anything changed recently ?

I have already enabled the SSH, but its not connecting from putty. so i thought to reset the host setting & restart the host. after starting up its asking the root password to change the IP. i think it has reset the root password also. can you tell me what is the default password of root?

    thanks

When re-installing ESXi 5 there is an option to preserve existing VMFS datastores (just choose "preserve" there, I think it is the default, but I'm not sure now). After re-installing you just need to add the VM's to the host's inventory again: Browse the datastore in the vSphere client, find the VMs' .vmx files and register them.

Instead of re-installing you could also try to reset the root password following the (unsupported) instructions here: http://vm-help.com/esx/esx3i/Reset_root_password.php

But before you try all that ... are you sure that this is not just caused by a keyboard layout mismatch? Are you able to log on at the console/DCUI as root?

The broblem is solved. I reinstall the vSphere Client and it worked fine. And probably aftering reinstalling ESXi5 again & enabling SSH, through putty its accessable. but i am unable to understand how the vSphere Client got affedted anyway.

thanks a lot friend for your suggestions.
