  • 1.  Cannot assign user to a role

    Posted Jul 26, 2017 07:51 AM

    Hi *,

i want to assign some new created users to some roles. But i am not able, to assign them to the default roles like "Administrators" or even to edit this roles. Also if i create a new role, i am not able to add/edit permissions of this role.

We use a free license of ESXi 6.5 and access directly with WebClient. Is this some restriction of the free version?

    Thank you & best regards

    Max

Try changing the permissions assigned on an object, a VM for instance. Select the VM, right-click on it and select Permissions. Then select the user and the role you want assigned to it. Fine tune as needed.

    Thank you for your advice.

If i try to open the permissions, no popup or permission windows is appearing. The option in the dropdown menu is visible like in your screenshot, but nothing happens after selecting it.

You probably haven't created any users as yet other than root. Create a user and a custom role and see how it goes. You should see any newly created user accounts listed when assigning permissions.

    Also, using a free license with ESXi does restrict you in some ways but I can't see any related to permissions. The restrictions are;

    • You cannot manage / add ESXi to vCenter Server
    • No exposed API meaning for instance that you can't use backup software, etc.
    • A maximum of 2 physical processors per host
    • A maximum 8 vCPUs per virtual machine
    • No VMware Support

I found the answer to this just want to update this post to help other people that google it.

After creating a new user to add them go to the "Host" (top left in Navigator menu in esxi screen)

Under host then go to "actions" then go to "permissions" - here is where you can add your newly created user to a role like "administrator"

    Hope this helps future googlers.
