  • 1.  Canceling snapshot removal process

    Hello everybody

I just wanted to ask is it safe to cancel- delete all snapshot process ? I've made snapshot a while ago and now made mistake of deleting it when VM is still runing , after 6h its 12 %.  I really need to cancel this proces cause i cant have any downtime on that VM. The size of snapshot is 150 Gb , im using ESX 5.5 free

If there is no option to cancel this process ,can I shout down VM now, during that process ?

    Thanks

Why - if you can't afford downtime - would you want to cancel the job and/or shut down the VM. Just let it run and finish the job. Depending on the storage speed this may take some time, but snapshot deletion usually works flawlessly.

First, thanks Andre for fast answer,

but this machine need to work perfect tomorrow before 8 am, and now its unfortunately 11pm in my country so now I can wait and hope it will finish before deadline - what i don't belive will happen  or cancel it and start again at weekend with shuting down VM

I know that often 95 % hangs VM for some time , and im afraid with 150Gb snapshot it can be a lot of time :smileysad:

I also forgot to mention , there are 2 more snapshots - 23 Gb and 20 Gb

Anyway, even if i wont cancel it , I would really like to know if its possible to cancel it without destroying VM , i dont have any backups

To be honest, I never tried to cancel a snapshot deletion. However, I would expect that the job would finish to consolidate/merge the current snapshot file to be in a consistent state. If this is the case, canceling wouldn't help you much.

I don't know what type of storage you are using, but with the 6 hours that the job is already running and about 9 hours to go, the required throughput is less than 3MB/sec. which each storage system should easily be able to do. It certainly also depends on other tasks which are running on the host. What you can do is to take a look at the performance tab to see the data rate.

On the other side, doe the VM perform poorly with the snapshot deletion currently running?

PS: "I don't have any backups" <-- That's definitely a reason to let it run and finish the job, and it's also a reason to think about backups!!!
