Hello I am student at a local collage here in town. I am help they setup a virtual lab for teaching redhat and windows servers. We have the hardware on order and the software is vcenter 4.1 and esxi 4.1. What we don’t know is how much bandwidth is requirements for let’s say one remote view per student and 30 students connect at one time.

    Welcome to the Communities.

It will depend on the protocol you use to connect to the servers.

For Windows servers here is an RDP calculator http://rdpcalc.com/

For the Redhat servers what protocol will you be using to connect? You should have no problem with SSH. You can use xrdp to connect to an X11 display using an RDP client

We can’t use rdp or vnc because we have a limit on the number of public ip that we can use. We also would like for the student to be able to take snapshots and make/remove vm. All of the students will be using the vSphere Client. Some of the students will access over lan, some over the collage wifi but most will access of their home.

I'm not sure how using the vSphere client change the number of public IPs you need? Using the vSphere client over the WAN especially with a large number of connection may not be a very satisying experience. I don't know that there is a steady state bandwidth requirement. I just tried across a WAN connection and got spikes as high as 3Mbps but 300Kbps was a reasonable average high.

Ok that should be fine. We will have between 50-100mbit connect to the outside world and up to 1gbit to the desktop and up to 54mbit to the wifi network.

You will also need to calculate the bandwith consumption of whatever VPN / tunnel solution you use.

My measurement was by no means a well controlled scientific test. Latency will be an issue as well. I would do your own to see how your guestimate compares.

There will be no vpn the students connect direct to the vcenter server.

So you will allow students to connect from home and expose the vCenter server directly to the Internet?

    Good Luck

Yes but there will be a cisco asa firewall that will block all but the needed ports.
