  • 1.  AMD64 computer on Intel based ESX

    HI,

    I have a small question.

    sorry for my ignorance.

I have downloaded a Ubuntu 10.10 server image. It comes as a AMD 64 bit computer.

Now, i have a ESX 4.1 server  running on a intel based 64 bit processor.

Now, is it ok to deploy the ADM64 bit VM computer on the Intel based ESX ?

    Is it supported ?

    Thanks.

    Hi Santosh,

According to this kb, you could have problem. But if you have a generic kernel (what should be the case now for latest Ubuntu), it should be OK. Best solution is to test it...

    Good luck.

    Thanks Franck.

The KB talks about migrating a AMD VM to Intel based ESX (and vice versa).

Is it true for fresh deployment also ?

I mean there might be issues if you deploy a fresh AMD VM on intel based ESX ?

The AMD64 designation comes about since AMD was the first to propose a 64bit architecture. Intel adopted the architecture and the AMD64 name stuck.

    Thanks !!

However, if i am not wrong, we have specific 64 bit processors from intel (viz ia64 or intel64).

so it means that AMD64 VM and Intel64 VM will differ in their proccessor type ?

Again, is it still ok to go ahead and deploy the AMD proccessor VM on intel based ESX ?

    Thanks

IMO you should go ahead and try it. Usually the guest OS will recognize the other CPU architecture and work. If there are issues they will only occur within the VM and should not cause any issues on the ESX or for the other VMs running on the host.

    Is it supported ?

The OS (Ubuntu 10.10) itself is supported to run on ESX(i) 4.1 (see http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php?deviceCategory=software) However, to find out about support for the VM image itself you will have to ask the provider of the image.

    Thanks a.p

    I deployed the VM.

So far it is working fine :smileyhappy:

No issues either during deployment or post-deployment.

The string "AMD64" had made me a little skeptical about its support on Intel processor based ESX servers.
