  • 1.  Am I compatible?

This is going to be my first install of VMware Essentials and I'm worried about compatibility.  The intended server is a Dell PowerEdge T420 with 2 E5-2420 CPU's.  Hindsight 20/20 I should have checked the HCL first because now that I look at it the server doesn't appear there.  Am I in for trouble?

    Thanks

It actually shows up in the VMware Compatibility Guide as being supported for ESXi 4.1 Update 2 and later.

What you may want to check additionally is the Storage/RAID controller you use.

Thank you, Andre - and can you tell me if that means it is compatible with 5.1?

And the raid card is an H710.  Would you mind helping me verify it as well?

The HCL list is your friend.

But also remember that compatible does not mean that is the best/recommended option.

For example, if you plan to use local storage, not all the RAID cards works in the same way (use the PERC with more cache AND battery).

    Thank you

Actually we already have the server; I'm hoping it will be a good fit.  Can you share any other thoughts about the perc vs the m710 cards?  The plan is to run 3 virtual windows servers on this device - 1 - DC/file sharing 2 - Terminal server running QB  and 3 - Database server.  There are currently about 30 users, about half accessing remotely via a vpn and rdp.  Do you think I'm going to be in for trouble running this raid card?  We have 12 sas drives, my plan was for a raid 6 with 2 hot spares and 2 parity drives.
