  • 1.  Adding a 2nd ESXi server to iSCSI storage, versioning issues?

    Posted Nov 22, 2010 09:05 PM

    Hello all,

I have iSCSI attached storage that I have a current R710 Dell server running ESXi 4.0.0 208167, been running awhile now without issues.

I just received a 2nd server, similar R710 but it has the latest version of ESXi 4.1.0 260247

Can I add this to the SAN without issues? Add it to the vsphere client, I have vshpere essentials licensing on that.

If there are version issuse I'll probably roll back the new server to the same version that I currently have in production.

    Thoughts anyone?

    Hello.

As long as the SAN is listed on the HCL for both versions, I would go ahead and add it without worry.

    Good Luck!

If you have vCenter Server 4.0 running, you need to upgrade it to version 4.1 in order to be able to add and manage ESX(i) 4.1 hosts.

Thanks guys, appreciate the responses. I'm trying to make sure I don't step on a land mine. Wasn't there a issue with 4.0.0 when adding a newer version of vshpere into the mix? My company is very downtime in-tolerant so upgrading/patching the production machine is the least prefered option.

Like André said, if you are using vCenter 4.0, then you will need to get it to version 4.1 before you can manage the ESXi 4.1 host with it. If you are not using vCenter to manage these ESXi hosts, then they can exist in different versions on the same SAN without any issue.

and the new vcenter 4.1 supports 64bit windows 2008 R2 only. you may need to completely rebuild the OS if it's 32 bit.
