  • 1.  4 CPUs on Windows 7 VM

    Hello,

I would like to put 4 CPUs on a Windows 7 VM, however the Virtual machine is only seeing 2 CPUs.  My understanding is that Windows 7 can see an unlimited number of cores, however it can only see 2 physical CPUs.

Because of this I believe the Windows 7 VM is viewing the virtual CPUs as physical, not as cores.  For this reason the VM is never going to see more that 2 CPUs.

Can someone confirm this for me?

    Thanks.

This worked, I am now seeing 1 physical processor with 4 cores.  Now whether or not we get any additional performance from the VM is another question, but the user is happy, so thanks.

there is no need, in my opinion to go to 4vCPU's for a workstation OS, even if the OS could see it.  Windows 7 is only ever going to see 2 sockets, but can see multiple cores.  If using 4.1 you can provide cores to the OS, but you'll still need to present 4vCPU's, which in my opinion is a wasted effort.
