  • 1.  32-bit Vista network driver not installing after conversion

    Posted May 10, 2010 04:18 PM

I have a 32-bit Vista VM that I built on Server 2 (running on 2003 Server). I used Stand-alone Converter to move it to an ESX4i server (IBM x3650 base). I powered it up, but it will not install the driver for the e1000 network card listed in the hardware summary for the VM.

I have removed and readded it, tried letting Vista search the machine for the driver (which I know exists in system32\drivers), and tried installing other drivers. I have checked the .vmx file for the VM and it does have the ethernet0.virtualDev = "e1000" line, so that isn't the issue. It is seen as a 32-bit Vista Guest OS, so no reason to mess with that.

    Any ideas? Thanks.

the guest has the most current VMware Tools installed? What error are you getting?

The guest does have the latest Tools installed. I upgraded them as soon as I powered up the machine after the conversion.

I am not getting any errors. Rather, when I log into Windows, the prompt to install a driver for new hardware (the network controller) comes u. Regardless of the path I take to install a driver for the hardware, Windows always tells me that it cannot find a driver. In Device Manager, it shows up under Other devices and an Ethernet Controller, but has the yellow problem icon since it has no driver to use.

here's what would do...Remove the existing network adapter, then

    1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd.exe, and then press ENTER.

    2. Type set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1, and then press ENTER.

    3. Type Start DEVMGMT.MSC, and then press ENTER.

    4. Click View, and then click Show Hidden Devices.

    5. Expand the Network Adapters tree.

    6. Right-click the dimmed network adapter, and then click Uninstall.

When complete, install a new apapter and see what happens. If asked for drivers point to

    c:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Tools\Drivers\vmxnet

When I mentioned earlier that I had removed it and readded it, that's what I did. When I remove it from the available hardware of the VM, it doesn't show up in Device Manager at all. When it is available, Windows only sees it as an Other Device, but knows it is an Ethernet Adapter. It just refuses to use the Windows driver for it.
