Identifying Devices in Device Manager with PCIDatabase

Jun 30, 2008 01:37 PM

Ever go looking for a device, but can't seem to find out what it is?

While searching for a device one day, I stumbled onto this website called PCIDatabase. I can type in the Vendor info or the Dev info and get an idea who makes it. Granted, this does not find it for me, but I can find out who makes it and it points me in the right direction, which is more than what I started with.

Let's begin.

First, we will take a look at the "PCI Device" in our Device Manager.

Double-click "PCI Device" or right-click and select "Properties". Once in here, go to the "Details" tab.

Notice that I've highlighted the "VEN" entry and the "DEV" entry. That is your Vendor ID and your Device ID. The way I look at is is like this:
VEN_8086 is the same as Vendor ID = 8086
DEV_284B is the same as Device ID = 284B

Now that you have your Vendor ID and your Device ID, go to PCIDatabase and you should see the "Vendor Search" and "Device Search" boxes.

You can only search one field at a time, but if you use the Vendor Search and search "8086", you will see that that Vendor ID belongs to "Intel".

Now, you know who makes it, but that doesn't tell us what the device is. You don't have to do the Vendor search to find out who it is, but there are cases where you will search for a device and there is more than one device with that ID.

Notice that there are two devices listed, but if you look over at the "Vendor ID" field, you can see that it matches the previous Vendor ID. Now, you know that it's an "Intel audio controller embedded with the 82801H chipset (ICH8 chipset)".

This has saved me a lot of time on numerous occasions, especially when we're looking for drivers for our PC models. I hope this helps all of you as much as it helps me.
