LongName Utility FDP

Oct 18, 2015 06:22 PM

This link provides access to the LongName FDP and other associated enhancements that are offered "as is" for customers to validate potential UI and functional changes, for Example ESrchfor, the Diff tool and CompElm facility.

These prototypes work by providing an override to the standard Endevor panels/clists etc. and so should be installed in separate libraries and concatenated ahead of the shipping Endevor versions.  The attached zip file contains the basic distribution and a document with full details on how to perform the install, however the basic steps are summarised here for convenience:

  1. Unzip the package
  2. Upload the .XMIT file as binary (FB80)
  3. Receive the .XMIT file to create a PDS
  4. Execute @@START1 member in this file to set installation defaults - HLQs for Endevor and the new HLQ for the LongName FDP
  5. Execute @@START2 member to create the @@START3 job (it should be tailored ready to go) and...
  6. Submit the @@START3 member
  7. Execute @@START4 to launch a sample startup Rexx, and FDP Menu as the IVP.

Option L will launch the LongName utility, use PF1 to review the help, and then 'C' to review the changes

Please provide any feedback under the appropriate Idea entry, (a selection listed below) or provide further feedback here or in use ideas as needed.

WideScreen - Endevor QE Widescreen Support

ESrchfor - As an End  user I need a better search tool

Diff Tool - Enhanced element compare

User Extension Points - User Extension Points in QuickEdit and Endevor...

Project Switcher - Endevor Project Switcher

*Updated to Bundle V40 - including support for Spaces in long element names, and a fix for ESrchfor when the element name starts with a numeric (Thanks Steve)

*Updated to Bundle V43 - Including support for ENUXSITE (multiple C1DEFLTS), EDups (finding and managing duplicate elements, and a new tool for Administrators, SnapMon to show Endevor activity

*Updated to Bundle V44 - Fix for ENUXSITE processing

*Updated to Bundle V45 - Further enhancements to ENUXSITE processing and error messaging - Note: If ENUXSITE returns non-zero RC, LongName will not attempt to use the "updated" table name and will instead defer to Endevor.

*Updated for Bundle V47 - Adding View/Edit of ASCII and UTF-8 files, with full Profile support.  LongName now queries Endevor for the correct Record Length and Format when Editing/Viewing elements so you no longer have to hard-code overrides.

*Updates for Bundle V48 - Added a user command to SUBMIT a job directly from Endevor, that alone is handy enough, but it's a great template for any User command you want to add yourself that needs the element source (see User Extension Points in QuickEdit and Endevor... for more details).

This version also adds support for Projects from the ActionBar.  LongName and Quick/Edit now automatically keep a history of locations you've visited to allow instant access to them.  You can also use the Project manager to mark your own favourite locations so they are always available from the ActionBar.  From the project manager you can also tailor how granular the information is, for example you can save and restore the Search map, and First Found options, or CCIDs and Comments associated with particular locations.  See the original idea here:Endevor Project Switcher for more information and to add your comments/requests.

*Update for Bundle V49 - Renamed the WherAmI function to Wher@m1 to avoid conflicts with user functions (seen at one site)
Note: use this bundle for compatibility with Endevor versions prior to V18.0.07

*Update for Bundle V50 - This bundle includes compatibility fixes for the Endevor Classic, Long Name feature PTF (R00144), or if you have installed incremental release Endevor V18.0.07 or later please use this version, otherwise you should use version V49.  There are now compatible WideScreen prototypes available for the Display and Retrieve element selection lists. ESort and EOnly are also updated to support the new fields.

Note: You must issue an ECols followed by RESET commands for each of these views to update the columns displayed - after that you can tailor as usual.

*Update for Bundle V51 - This bundle includes compatibility fixes for the ESort, EOnly and EPrint commands delivered with Endevor V18.0.07

*Update for Bundle V52 - This bundle includes compatibility fixes for Quick/Edit with the LongName & Widescreen PTFs (R00176), or if you have installed the incremental release V18.0.08 or later. This version still provides override versions of the QuickEdit panels intended as a preview/prototype of an enhanced WideScreen (where you can edit ALL the columns widths, their colour, and their order) as well as ActionBar support. Again the first time you visit the QuickEdit screens, use the ECOLS followed by RESET commands to pick up the new columns.  Note: Bundle V49 is still available for compatibility with Endevor prior to V18.0.06.

*Update for Bundle V56 - This bundle includes additional compatibility fixes for Quick/Edit with the LongName & Widescreen PTFs (RO94361), or if you have installed the incremental release V18.0.09 or later. This version provides includes CUA compliant panels to enable options like click to sort by column headings, and the ability to change the colour/appearance of QuickEdit using the CUAATTR options (review the Change history for all the options).  A new EHiLite command allows you to control Endevor message displays in browse/view mode now with dynamic keyword colour hi-lighting so that ERROR messages will stand out and are easier to read. You can also toggle between BROWSE and VIEW modes using the EVEdit command, and even see the colour hi-lighting in SDSF or SYSVIEW using the ESDSF and ESYSview commands from within Endevor.

*Update for Bundle V58 - This bundle includes compatibility fixes for Endevor V18.0.12 (GA Complete)
Including correction for ECols in COPYELM/COMPELM panels.

*Update for Bundle V59 - This bundle includes stability and performance fixes and is recommended for all users of Endevor V18.0.12 (GA Complete) or later.

*Update for Bundle V61 - This bundle includes support/compatibility for the latest Endevor maintenance and updates (simplifies) the install doc.

*Update for Bundle V63 - This bundle includes support/compatibility for the latest Endevor maintenance including; The Quick Edit Batch Action Feature (CD180101 - SO11288) and subsequent "tweaks" PTF (SO12079).

*UPDATE for Bundle V66 - This bundle includes support/compatibility for the latest Endevor maintenance including; Quick Edit User Routines (CD180102 - SO14704)

*UPDATE for Bundle V67 - This bundle includes support/compatibility for the latest Endevor maintenance including LU00249 (PERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENT TO ISPF ELEMENT LIST PANEL).

*UPDATE for Bundle V68 - This bundle includes support/compatibility for the latest Endevor maintenance including LU09037,LU09038 (QE ELEMENT LIST COLUMN CUSTOMIZATION - CCOLS).

Sadly no, V17 andV18 have separated too far to share one set of overrides.  To use the FDP with V17 you will need still need the V49 version.

...and breaking news there is a small correction for ECOLS in the COPYELM and COMPELM commands pick it up if you need that support,
and remember QuickEdit users will need to issue an ECOLS;RESET to pickup the updated columns.

As always your feedback is greatly appreciated.

I have Bundle58 working with V18.0.12, is it backwardly compatible with V17 of Endevor?

The documentation is fantastic.

The ability to customise my display and columns (including colours) are making checking tasks much easier via this.

I can now see at a glance which CCID is related to the elements when they were moved as well as description and if they are pacakge locked ready for production.

This functionality in the base product for the ISPF piece would be great.

Hi Charles,

You are right, there is a "little more detail" required to Step 4 - but this is why there is an attached zip file which, in addition to the bundle distribution file contains, a document with full details on how to perform the install.  The first time through, you do have to tailor the "@<site>" member, on subsequent installs/upgrades, the existing file with your customisations should be found and re-used. The idea of listing the "basic steps" is as an aide-memoire to those re-installing, and to give an overview for first time users.

As to AHLQ - it's the Application (run-time) high-level qualifier (where you might find Package Datasets, Parmlib, ACMQ etc.).

Hope that helps point you in the right direction, but if you still have questions, please drop me a line.

Between steps 4 and 5 there is actually a step to edit the @<sysplex_name> member (implied in the text for step 4, but not explicit)

It's not obvious what to edit, or what values to use (e.g. what is the value for AHLQ?)

I've had several requests to share the presentation/video files for the LongName demo - but embedded video in PowerPoints don't compress well and - well it's big.

If you want to access the full video content - try this link and let me know if you have any problems:

Hi Mathew,

I take your point about it being powerful, but in the end the same ESI, and Approver Group rules apply - your users shouldn't be able to do anything that they are currently restricted from doing anyway.  Sure it potentially exposes that functionality and makes it more accessible, but it also make it easy to perform those requests as package actions too, allowing you to APPEND individual actions, and then submit the SAVED GROUP as a Package.  But please remember the goal of the FDP is not to replace Endevor or QuickEdit, but just allow you early access to possible UI implementations, in particular WideScreen support, personal column settings (ECols) and the ability to see more data in the element and summary of levels view - ultimately we need your feedback to direct and prioritise these features.  Please continue to add your comments here or in the individual idea threads linked at the top.

As to the Ship Function, the FDP LongName utility shares some support (install code) that is also used by other Field Developed Solutions (you noticed the Ship/Deploy feature) which are a little more difficult to share as they require a little more support to install and configure - but if this is something you are interested in, please let me know and we can chat.

I installed it this afternoon.  I know that some of the capabilities will be useful for us, including the long name support and the userdata display.  I like that it bypasses the environment selection list.  It is somewhat too powerful.  We do not allow move or transfer actions without packages or packages without memorandum, so we will probably need to implement some modifications to remove those functions.  The configuration implies that there is ship function automation - not sure how that works.

SnapMon is a great tool. I've already learnt that one Endevor instance  at our shop aren't big QE users, so we are taking steps to educate them about this.

Thanks SBAshby, we've worked hard to streamline the bundle install to make it quick and easy to evaluate the prototype features - now which potential feature should we work on next?  "Block line commands" for Move and/or Package generation?  A line command for CREATE/ADD/UPDATE in place so you can still use QuickEdit when the source is in an external library, or USS Path, or some other product with it's own source APIs (e.g. TWS, RACF, etc.)?

Hi Eoin,

I have downloaded and installed the V39 package very quickly.

The install guide is so clear, it made the whole process very easy. Thank you for that.

It works fine with V18 too.

Thanks SteveBlackett for pointing out that the imbedded font may not render nicely if you are using Acrobat reader - remember to set your Page Display options to, Rendering, Smooth Text for Latop/LCD screens - and pointing out a few typo's - version 2 of the download does not change the install file, but does enhance the doc.
