Excellent,
I have the right engineering in a discussion right now so I should be able
to provide an update about next steps today. I appreciate YOUR
understanding in the amount of time it took us to fully understand the
issue at hand!
More as it develops!

Nate,
yes, the issue is with those menu buttons. I have not seen any difference in any other location in the app where there are links. In all other places I either see the new menu or I see the "standard" web browser options when I right-click.
I appreciate your understanding of this issue and recognition that it is a change in behavior that should be handled as defect. I look forward to your update.

Subject: Right-click on Detail Editor icons doesn't allow opening in another browser window
Hello Everyone,
After following this discussion I believe that I understand what is happening, but let me summarize to ensure that I have the correct understanding.
Is the right-click functionality that you are missing is the option to "Open in a new tab" for these buttons specifically?

If so, I want to make it clear that this has nothing to do with the new right-click menu functionality that we announced here a few weeks ago. The new menu only affects the ID links that you find throughout the application. That is to say, it is only enacted on items like this:

And here you obviously do still get that option.
The change in behavior of the editor buttons almost certainly is related to an internal change that we had to make for editor windows to remove outdated and problematic technology from the platform. It is likely because the element type changed and the browser no longer sees it as a link and therefore the browser is not giving you the option to open in a new window. (The menu you've posted is a browser menu and not one we build).
To move forward, Dave and I will confer with our engineering staff to see if we can get the browser to once again recognize these buttons as links and return with an update.
Thank you very much for the discussion.

Ctrl+Click kinda works. It opens the same object (e.g., story) into a different window and then I have to open the menu option. Its a shame you couldn't preserve this functionality with the right+click for all menu options. I use it heavily.

For that you will probably need to use the CTRL+click (for Windows) or command+click (for Mac).
The "Open in a new tab" availability is defined by the method used to craft links on a page. In this case we are using javascript to "simulate" a link, which the browser can't anticipate and therefore doesn't add that option into the context menu.

yes, I do there. But this is where it is missing: This is the Tasks button from a User story. Any option in the "menu" does not allow open in new tab

Do you have this option at the bottom of the menu?

Also, for Windows, you can hold CTRL and click and with Mac you can hold Command and click on the story ID to open in another window.

I just tired and the shift-right-click does not give me the option to open to another tab.

In order to implement the new right-click option, they needed to override the browser's default right-click menu on those fields. Just use Shift-right-click to access your browser's usual right-click menu.

why was this changed? I didn't see anything in the release notes about this ability being removed. I did see the information about the new right-click options, but the existing options shouldn't've been removed

I understand their use case with this change, but it hampers power users who want to do things like open in different windows or right-click on a series stories in a feature and spawn a lot of background tabs at once. There should be a way in the user preferences to turn this off.
If like me, this functionality is causing you problems, hold down SHIFT while you right-click on an item (I think it might be the Command button on Apple) and then your browser's context menu should appear when you right-click.

Was it a decision to remove the ability to open right-click on an icon and open the page in a different window? for example, when looking at a work item from the Detail Editor, if I right click on Tasks or Discussion, I don't have the option to open in a different window. I do this a lot so that I can toggle between views.
