Layer 7 API Gateway version upgrade to 11.x

Hi,

One of our client is still running on Layer 7 Gateway version 9.4 (for whatever reason).

They want to upgrade to 11.x now.

Considering that an in-place upgrade is not possible, whether an upgrade (from 9.x or 10.x ) is made to 11.x, do they still need to upgrade from 9.x to 10.x, before upgrading to 11.x.

Could you please confirm that an upgrade to 10.x is not needed, before the upgrade to 11.x, and that the following steps would work for upgrade from 9.4 to 11.x?

1. Build/configure new gateway for 11.x and apply the CR01 and other patches
2. Take mysqldump from the existing 9.4 gateways
3. Restore it on the new 11.x gateway

Hi Maddy,

Thank you for participating in the Layer 7 Communities site.

We do not currently formally test the upgrade from Gateway 9.4 directly to 11.0 so the recommended sequence would be to first upgrade to Gateway 10.x using the manual expedited upgrade process.

However we do see reasonable indications whereby customers attempting the upgrade from 9.x to 11.x have been successful (without involving the 10.x step) so it's not prohibited as an upgrade path for any known technical reasons / blockers.

If we are going with the recommended approach of upgrading to 10.x first, does it need the 10.1 licenses for completing the upgrade activities?

Hi Maddy

You should obtain 10.x licenses if you are planning to do 9.4 --> 10.x --> 11.x

You will also eventually need Gateway 11.x licenses too.

Hi,

I had this exact situation 2 weeks ago with a customer and I thought it best to ask support directly. This is their answer:

It is not recommended nor it is supported by Broadcom to have 9.4 ssg database incorporated in the version 11 gateway. So our decision would be to upgrade to 10.x first and then to 11.
