We're excited to share a new enhancement to our Recovery Estimator batch utility (RECOVER-TOOL ESTIMATE RECOVERY) that offers a significant step forward in how recovery options are evaluated for Db2 objects.

With this update, Recovery Estimator can now estimate and compare multiple recovery plans for the objects you specify. This makes it easier to understand your recovery options and select the most efficient path forward.

    What's New?

The enhanced Recovery Estimator constructs and evaluates various recovery strategies for your Db2 objects based on the available recovery bases and assets. It supports the following recovery plans:

    • Forward recovery from sequential image copies and Db2 log

    • Forward recovery from concurrent image copies and Db2 log

    • Forward recovery from FlashCopy image copies and Db2 log

    • Forward recovery from System-level backup (SLB)

    • Backout recovery using the existing Db2 VSAMs and Db2 log

    • Index rebuild

    • Forward recovery using only Db2 log

Each recovery plan is ranked based on estimated recovery time and availability of resources, helping you identify the best option for your recovery scenario.

This enhancement also  includes the following updates:
    • The Recovery Point Specification Options syntax has been updated to improve syntax consistency across backup and recovery utilities.
    • The following keywords and options have been suspended:
      • DSNUM PART - Use the DSNUM ALL option instead. When processing all partitions of a partitioned object, and the recovery plan supports recovery at the object level and at the partition level, Recovery Estimator always evaluates both variants of the recovery plan.
      • PIT RTO
    • The ADMIN_COMMAND_DB2 and ADMIN_DS_LIST Db2 stored procedure are not required to execute Recovery Estimator.
Note: The updated Recovery Estimator accepts the previous syntax; however, we recommend you update Recovery Estimator and your Recovery Estimator jobs with the new syntax to benefit from all new features.

    Why It Matters

Multiple plan support gives you greater visibility and control over your recovery planning. By comparing multiple recovery options up front, you can make more informed decisions that minimize downtime and ensure business continuity.

You can learn more about Recovery Estimator's features in our technical documentation.

We encourage you to explore this new enhancement and contact us if you'd like to discuss how it can help streamline your recovery planning process. We'd be happy to connect.
