  • 1.  How to set up MCS profiles to monitor processes?

    Posted Oct 31, 2022 06:30 AM
I'm re-creating some MCS configuration to monitor that certain Windows processes are running, using the "processes" probe. Originally such MCS configuration was created on an older version of UIM (the "Details" window in Operator Console says it has "Template version 2.44").

The new configuration is being created on a new UIM 20.4 CU4 installation, with processes v4.80 and processes_mcs v4.70 ("Details" window shows "Template version 4.70.1").

On the old installation, the MCS profile is configured to generate an alarm if the process isn't running:

    Generate Alarm
      Process Restart: (inactive)
      Report on Process: Down
Severity: Information (greyed out, think it's related to the inactive "Process Restart" field)
      Severity: Critical
Severity: Information (greyed out, becomes available if I set "Report on Process" to either "Up" or "(none)")

When I set up a new MCS profile, based on "Processes (Enhanced)", I only see some of these fields, and I can't change them - they are greyed out / not possible to change:
      Process Restart: (inactive, greyed out)
      Severity: Information (greyed out)

How can I configure an MCS profile to give alarms of a certain severity level when the process is (or isn't) running?

    Hello Eivind,

this is working through Alarm Policy.

    Thanks!

I’ve now read that article, but think I still am missing (not understanding) a piece of the puzzle.

    Here’s what I’m doing:

    First, I create MCS profiles:

    * Add “Setup process (Enhanced)”
    * Add “Processes (Enhanced)”, gives it a profile name, sets “Recognize Process By” to “Available Processes” + “Mode” = “Name” + “Process Name” = “SomeCommand.exe”, and ensures “Collect Metric” is “On” for “Process Instances”.

Then I go to Alarm Policies and adds a new policy:

    * I set the policy name to something reasonable (same name as the process it monitors)
    * I “Add Condition”, and select the required Group. For “Choose Metric”, I see System -> Process -> State as the most likely so I select that. When asked about Component (“All Components” or “RegEx or Pattern”), I am unsure. Should I here add a RegEx which is the same as the process name (“/^SomeCommand.exe$/”) ?
    * I don’t see anywhere else where I could add which process an alarm policy is actually going to be looking at – “Thresholds” just lets me set the alarm severity and criteria based on a number.

Med vennlig hilsen / Best regards,
