    Good Morning Everyone,

We are pleased to announce that "End State" for Capacity Plans is coming in the next few weeks.  This feature will "freeze" all of the values within your capacity plan once the plan is finished.  There is a new attribute called "Finalize Date" that governs when this will happen, and though it defaults to the end date of the release, you can change it to any future date.

What happens when the Plan is "Finalized"?

Once a plan is "finalized," all the items in the plan, their estimation values, the completed value, and the rollup value will no longer show the "current state" of the items but rather will show the values they had on the finalize date.  In this state, the plan becomes read-only with the exception of metadata like "Name", and the ability to move the "Finalize Date" forward to a future date.

You will be able to easily tell if the Plan has been "Finalized" by a banner that appears at the top of the page.  For "Plan of Plans," you will see the specific included plans with a gray background and an icon that indicates the data is historical.

    Why are you doing this?

Currently, Capacity Plans always show you the current state - so your "Completed" value will continue to increase long after a Plan is "over" and if that Feature is in multiple plans, they will all show the same "Completed" value.  This means that if a Feature was supposed to finish in "Plan 1" but didn't, and it then finishes in "Plan 2", the fact that you did not finish in "Plan 1" would be lost.  If you open "Plan 1" in this scenario, it would appear as though the Feature finished successfully.  This makes using historical Plan execution data as a basis for creating more achievable plans impossible.

The problem is further exacerbated in "Plan of Plans" because you will see past plans, current plans, and future plans in the same view.  Showing "current state" when tracking the higher-level portfolio items in a "Plan of Plans" plan would eliminate the capability of seeing how those items have progressed through the collection of plans.

As always, if you have questions or concerns about this functionality, please contact us and we would be happy to discuss those with you.
