#ProductAnnouncements
Dear Valued Customer,
We are writing to provide an update on an issue the Rally team has been investigating this week, where certain embedded attachments uploaded into Rich-Text fields (e.g., Description, Notes) were not visible from the work item, appearing instead as broken links.
Upon investigation, we determined that this problem occurs when work items containing embedded attachments are created using the "copy" function.
When a work item with embedded attachments is copied, Rally does not create copies of the embedded attachments themselves. Instead, the content of the original work item, including any embedded image URLs, is copied to the new work item. This means the text fields of the copied work item contain image URLs that point back to the original work item's attachments.
Rally does provide a warning to users about this behavior when a work item is being copied.

Users viewing the copied work items see broken links because the embedded attachment has either been deleted from the original work item, or the original work item itself has been deleted and purged from the recycling bin.
Important Note: This behavior applies only to embedded attachments within copied work items. Attachments added to the attachments bar are not propagated from the original work item to its copy and therefore are not subject to this specific problem.
Regrettably, our analysis of the root cause revealed that the embedded attachments associated with the broken links are not recoverable, as they have been deleted and removed due to age.
We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.
To address these findings, we plan to implement the following improvements:
-
Enhanced Warning Message: We will improve the warning message displayed during the copy process to more clearly describe this behavior and require user acknowledgment of the warning.
-
Updated Documentation: We will update our documentation to provide details on how "copy" work items with embedded attachments work, including best practices and helpful tips.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions, or need further clarification.
Sincerely,
Rally Product Management
