Spectrum 9.2 Monitoring of TCP/UDP Ports

Just a question in general.....Can Spectrum monitor a TCP/UDP port on a Windows server and produce an alarm when the port drops a connection?

Thanks in advance for any replies!

    Hi Mike,

What about using Spectrum performance manager(SPM) tests?

Hi Mike, I've the same question, did you accomplish that?

You need to have a Service Response host that performs the test. This can be a Cisco Router with the IP-SLA software, a SystemEDGE host that has the Service Response AIM installed, etc... Once you have this, SPECTRUM can schedule/run the SPM test that tests the port which you then build into a Service Model that alarms based upon the response test condition. By default, a down port will produce a SPM Test Timeout which is only a Minor Alarm so you need the Service Model to elevate that condition higher/lower as your needs require.

    SPM can achive this ..

SPM by itself cannot achieve this.... In order to do anything beyond simple ICMP tests (that's all the VNM model is capable of doing) you need a Service Response Host (Cisco Router with IP-SLA, Service Response AIM, etc.).

Yes, if you don't have Router with IP-SLA, you can install SystemEDGE + SRM (Service Response Monitor) plugin on a Server to create a Test Host that run the Tests. We discover and model the Test Host using its Read-Write SNMP community string and use OneClick Console to create/configure the SPM Tests.

    Matt,

Configuring TCP test in widows server -level requires only System edge and SRM. Hope cisco ip-sla test used for applying tests in n/w models.

If I want to measure the latency or packet loss using UDP (and not ICMP), I can use SPM if I have a Cisco Router.

I have a such a CiscoRouter (it has "UDP" ticked in the TestHost table shown by OneClick).

Should I use it as source for testing a HP switch response ? I tried but no SPM test was produced (I used the template with a Global Collection for the destinations). Looks like I am missing something here. Can you help ?

    Thanks!

If you're using SPM to schedule the test against a Cisco device, it needs to have a read/write SNMP community defined (Read-Only can't schedule the test on the router). The device also has to have the IP-SLA feature set as well.

The other thing to consider (from the SPECTRUM Documentation): UDP tests must be configured to target a destination port that is listening for UDP traffic. For example, many Cisco devices running IOS IP SLAs use port 1967 and UNIX systems use port 7. Failure to configure the port can result in timeouts for UDP tests. Set the Destination Port parameter in the General options for UDP tests.

    Thanks!

If I am already using successfully that router for ICMP SPM tests with spectrum, does it imply that 1) it has that read/write community string 2) it has the IP-SLA feature set ?

If yes, then something else does not work. If not, then I have to read the cisco router doc ;-)

It's an and/or thing... You need a SystemEDGE SRM-enabled host AND/OR an IP-SLA based device.... the point being that SPECTRUM SPM cannot do the tests alone without that piece except for basic ICMP tests.

What kind of answer will the IP-SLA test get for a UDP test ?
